| The Upper Peninsula of Michigan borders three of the Great Lakes. This makes for some premier angling opportunities. All three of the lakes (Superior, Michigan, & Huron) boast the finest freshwater fishing available. Lake Michigan & Lake Huron have larger sized fish, but Lake Superior boasts the most scenic rivers the State of Michigan has to offer.
Steelhead:
Steelhead fishing in the Upper Peninsula is quite different from anything you have ever experienced before! From the pocket-water fast moving streams of Lake Superior to the larger watersheds of Lake Michigan, our Steelhead are a very unique fish. The Lake Superior Steelhead average 3-6 lbs of pure strength. Pound for pound there is no other Great Lakes Steelhead that can compare. Even the most experienced steelheader will admit these fish are very special! Our Spring Steelhead fishing begins in early April, and depending upon when Spring meltoff occurs, usually fish are available until mid-May. Rainfall will dictate the Fall fishing here in the U.P. for Steelhead. Ample rainfall in late October will bring a push of Steelhead in from the lake to winter over in our rivers. This fishery starts in mid-October & has opportunities for you to catch fish until our Spring run occurs.
Salmon:
Salmon fishing here in the U.P. is a great opportunity to enjoy Fall colors and catch big fish! Every Fall mature Salmon (Chinook and Coho) make their annual spawning migration here in the U.P.. Our season begins in mid-September targeting these huge fish. Surf casting at river mouths on both Lake Superior & Lake Michigan is a very productive and exhilarating way to catch these huge fish! Averaging 6-20 lbs these fish when hooked surfcasting are quite the battle. Once the fish enter our rivers, you have until late October to enjoy the fishery. The Salmon definitely have the upper hand in the fight department when considering the lightweight fly-fishing equipment used to pursue them! Once in the stream, this is an excellent opportunity for novices/beginners to experience fly-fishing for the first time.
